CHC Represents You

Canadian Horticultural Council members are involved in a very diverse range of activities that have a significant impact on the horticultural sector, Canadian agriculture and the Canadian economy.

As a member, you are well represented on many key government and industry committees.

The list below identifies some of the crucial ways that the concerns of CHC members are brought forward and addressed at a national level:

Economic Management Advisory Committee (EMAC): The Chair of CHC's Crop, Plant Protection and Environment Committee sits on EMAC. This committee was established in April 1997 to advise the Executive Director of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) on specific ways to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness without compromising health or environmental protection and while maintaining industry competitiveness.

Pest Management Advisory Council (PMAC): CHC is represented by the Chair of the Crop, Plant Protection and Environment Committee. PMAC is a multi-stakeholder group that fosters communication and dialogue among stakeholders and with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), and provides advice to the Minister of Health on policies and issues relating to the federal pest management regulatory system.

Plant Breeders' Rights Advisory Committee: Three CHC appointees represent one of each of these commodity sectors:; Potatoes; Fruits & Vegetables.

AgriInsurance: Access to production insurance will help provide a foundation for sustainable farm income in a sector facing numerous challenges, including escalating production costs. Unpredictable weather results in severe challenges for all crops and thus all crops should have access to the support of production insurance. The CHC and its members have long supported the extension of adequate or meaningful production insurance to all crops.

AgriMarketing: The AgriMarketing Program aims to enhance marketing capacity and competitiveness of the Canadian agriculture abd agri-food sectors. The program assists industry associations to identify market priorities and equip themselves for success in global markets. The program provides funding for industry to develop and implement Long Term International Strategies (LTIS). AgriMarketing is the successor to AAFC's Canadian Agriculture and Food International (CAFI) program.

Foreign Worker Negotiations Representatives: The CHC annually appoints six designates across the country to represent horticultural interests.

Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program: The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program matches workers from Mexico and the Caribbean countries with Canadian farmers who need temporary support during planting and harvesting seasons, when qualified Canadians or permanent residents are not available.

North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO): A CHC member is directly appointed to NAPPO, and other CHC representatives participate on industry-specific panels. Canadian delegations to NAPPO meetings include representatives from industry. Click here for more information.

NAPPO Industry Advisory Group (IAG): Up to three CHC representatives, serving as elected members of the CPPAC Executive, belong to the NAPPO IAG.
