About the Committee
2010
Chair: Keith Kuhl, MB
Co-Chair: Gary Linkletter, PE
The Potato Committee advocates for the economic well-being of Canadian potato growers on federal legislative, regulatory, environmental and trade issues.
The Potato Committee is comprised of Canadian Horticultural Council members who produce, pack, ship, and process potatoes and seed potatoes in Canada, as well as representatives from the federal and provincial governments. The Potato Committee meets once a year in March at the Annual General Meeting to cover a wide range of business including regulatory and trade issues, plant health issues, crop protection tools, safety nets, research, food safety and other concerns of mutual interest. The Chair and Members of the Potato Committee Executive (PCE) are appointed at this time.
It is the responsibility of the PCE to implement the desires of the Potato Committee. The PCE is made up of 16 elected provincial representatives that meet as needed to deal with business as it arises. To assist the PCE in their decision making there are ten working groups/committees tasked with conducting in-depth analysis of matters affecting the industry and then making recommendations to the PCE. The working groups and committees are as follows:
- Seed Potato Sub-Committee
- Bacterial Ring Rot (BRR) Working Group
- Export Development Strategy Working Group
- Quality Assurance Working Group
- S. Cairns Chipping Potato Research Committee
- On Farm Food Safety (OFFS) Working Group
- Research Working Group
- Business Risk Management/Compensation Working Group
- Phytosanitary Certificates
- Potato Cyst Nematodes (PCN) Taskforce
On issues affecting the potato industries in Canada and the United States the PCE works with the National Potato Council and meets with their representatives annually in November as the Canada – United States Potato Committee.
