About the Committee
2010
Chair: André Plante, QC
The Science Advisory Committee (SAC) was established by resolution at the 2009 Annual General Meeting. Its goal is to facilitate identification of sector opportunities in the areas of innovation and research which will improve the profitability and competitive position of Canada’s horticultural sector.
The role of the SAC is to invite input and provide insights into research, science quality and direction for horticulture in Canada. The SAC will oversee the development and implementation of a business plan and associated funding proposals to achieve the desired results.
Activities
Planning for an Agri-Science Cluster
To date, the CHC has undertaken a number of activities to gather input from members, including: a member survey; Innovation and Research Symposium at the AGM, the formation of the Science Advisory Committee (SAC), numerous SAC conference calls; and a face-to-face SAC meeting in Ottawa June 3-4. SAC and CHC Executive Committee members have also been engaged in consultations with numerous stakeholders.
Next Steps
Through the planning phase the CHC will coordinate identification and rationalization of research priorities according to each commodity group’s needs. It is the responsibility of commodity committees to:
- Establish priorities in consultation with value chain members
- Rank priorities
- Match priorities to themes as identified March 3, 2009 at the CHC Research Symposium
- Identify cross-commodity synergies
- Indicate timelines to achieve and resource implications
CHC staff will coordinate these activities among commodity committees.
